Overview

The Sr. Director, Field-Based Medical Affairs will be responsible for ownership and management of field medical activities within a designated geographical territory and responsible for contributing to company-wide initiatives that support Chimerix strategy. This role will report to the Vice President of Medical Affairs and serve as a critical link between Chimerix and external healthcare providers (HCPs), establishing strong professional relationships with HCPs and other investigators within the territory by engaging in compliant exchange of scientific information, clinical trial support or other relevant discussions. Focusing on Neuro-Oncology, the Sr. Director, Field-Based Medical Affairs will provide a credible source for scientific expertise at Chimerix, collecting and reporting insights that will impact future medical and corporate strategy, the Chimerix Senior Leadership Team and other internal stakeholders.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary scientific liaison within the assigned territory, providing expert medical information to healthcare providers (HCPs) and key opinion leaders (KOLs)
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with KOLs, facilitating effective scientific communication and exchange of medical information
  • Gather relevant clinical & scientific insights from the assigned territory and reporting in a timely manner with internal stakeholders to inform and refine medical strategy and product development
  • Provide detailed scientific presentations as required to expand awareness of the disease state and relevant clinical data
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines in all scientific interactions and communications
  • Lead key medical initiatives to support advisory boards, investigator-initiated trials (IITs), field-based educational directives and other relevant projects
  • Support product launch activities by aligning regional territory plans with overall medical affairs and corporate strategy
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including commercial, regulatory and clinical development to align key medical messages and strategies
  • Attend and provide scientific support of US Medical Affairs activities and scientific sessions at regional and national congress meetings
  • Serve as an internal scientific resource for training and educational support

 

Qualifications

  • MD, PharmD or PhD with 4+ years of experience in field medical affairs, with strong clinical knowledge and experience in oncology; Neuro-Oncology experience preferred
  • Proven ability to excel in scientific communication and build relationships with healthcare professionals across all levels (KOL/Academic, community, etc) and demonstrated proficiency building strong KOL/HCP relationships
  • Extensive knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements related to field-based medical affairs activities
  • Experience supporting product launch(es) in Oncology and successful track record of field engagements in pre-launch/launch/post-launch settings
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams within the organization
  • Preference for candidates who have worked both within small and medium/large biotech or pharma companies

Knowledge, Skills and Physical Requirements:

  • Knowledge of the pharmaceutical or biotech market landscape in oncology and rare diseases, including emerging trends and challenges
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic plans for medical affairs activities, aligning with the overall goals of the organization.
  • Possess a proven ability to effectively communicate complex information, with demonstrated fluency in articulating scientific concepts and data
  • Skilled at working cross-functionally with teams such as commercial, regulatory, and research & development to ensure aligned and cohesive strategies. Experience in small-sized biotech is highly preferable.
  • Commitment to patient-centric approaches, ensuring the voice and needs of patients are represented in medical and scientific discussions.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically in developing medical strategies and designing plans for provider engagement
  • Must have good judgment, ability to adapt and change in a shifting environment
  • A strategic, passionate, self-starter who takes initiative
  • Must work well in large and small teams, ability to work remotely
  • Ability to travel frequently; estimated 60-80% of time including occasional weekends
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds

 

 

 

Work Location: Remote; 60-80% Travel within assigned territory; Occasional travel to Chimerix Home Office (Durham, NC)
